SATURDAY PHYSICS HONORS PROGRAM - FALL 2010 SCHEDULE

Welcome to the 2010 Saturday Physics Honors Program at the Physics Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. If you are a teacher,  please encourage your students to come.

The last Saturday Physics lecture in the Fall 2010 season will take place on December 4.  Professor Tony Liss,  Department of Physics, U. of Illinois will talk about "Unlocking the Dark Secrets of our Universe: How Studying the Smallest Things, with the Biggest Science Project Ever, Gets to the Heart of the Matter"

Professor Tony Liss
Title:  "Unlocking the Dark Secrets of our Universe: How Studying the Smallest Things, with the Biggest Science Project Ever, Gets to the Heart of the Matter."
Day: Saturday, December 4, 2010
Time: 10:15am
Place: 141 Loomis, 1110 West Green Street, Urbana
Abstract:The goal of particle physics is to explain the nature of the Universe at its most fundamental level, including the basic constituents of matter and their interactions. Despite incredible progress in this understanding over the last century, only 4% of the total mass-energy of the Universe is from matter we can produce in our laboratories. The remaining 96% is composed of mysterious dark matter, seen only through its gravitational influence, and even more mysterious dark energy, which drives an accelerating Universe. In this talk, I introduce these and other mysteries and discuss how experiments at the Large Hadron Collider might unlock these dark secrets of the Universe.

Lectures, including Q&A period last approximately 90 minutes. They are open to the general public and are free of charge.  We are looking forward to seeing you there!
