Presentation: What Do You Do With a Billion Transistors? - October 28, 2010

SPECIAL SEMINAR: What Do You Do With a Billion Transistors?

The concept of multiprocessing is not new. It has been around for many years. But what has given the concept a rebirth is the advancement of integrated circuit technology. We can now, with confidence, say that we will be able to put billions of transistors on one piece of silicon. We call it System on a Chip (SoC). But with that realization, we have discovered not all is goodness. This talk will look at multiprocessing, or multicore as some call it, and highlight both the goodness and the difficulties we face in this new world of options.

Thursday, October 28th
3:00pm
Rm. B02 Coordinated Science Lab

Presenter: Gene Frantz, TI Principal Fellow at Texas Instruments
Gene Frantz has been with Texas Instruments for over thirty years, working primarily in digital signal processing (DSP). He is a recognized leader in DSP technology both within TI and throughout the industry. He is a Fellow of IEEE and holds 45 patents in the area of memories, speech, consumer products, and DSP. He has written more than 50 papers and articles and regularly presents at universities and conferences worldwide.

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation seeks to recruit talented college graduates and mid-career professionals to teach science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (the STEM fields).
Woodrow Wilson’s Teaching Fellowship offers rigorous teaching preparation, extensive clinical experience, and ongoing mentoring, as well as a $30,000 stipend.  These new Woodrow Wilson Fellows will be STEM scholars and experts—outstanding college juniors and seniors majoring in these fields, recent college graduates, and second-career professionals—interested in teaching in high-need urban and rural middle and secondary schools.

Accepted Fellows will begin their studies in summer 2011 in a master’s degree program at one of fourteen participating universities in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.  In exchange, Fellows will commit to teach math or science in a high-need urban or rural middle or secondary school for three years upon completing the master’s degree and appropriate state teaching certification.

Fellows from various Woodrow Wilson programs, including 13 Nobel Laureates, 35 MacArthur “genius grant” winners, and two Fields Medalists in mathematics,  have gone on to achieve international recognition as intellectual leaders and top scholars.
