Illinois Insight, February 5, 2011

At Illinois Insight, you will learn skills that will help you:

• Assess your own strengths and weaknesses.
• Identify your values, motivations, passions and leadership style.

This program is offered at no cost to Illinois students and is a great way to jump start the new semester!

Do the Student Survey!

It’s very important for you to participate in the Engineering Student Survey:  engineering.illinois.edu/survey.   As you might know from a statistics class, surveys can represent viewpoints of minorities (such as women in engineering),  only if those populations are ‘oversampled’.  Basically, the  survey response rate among women has to be higher than that of men, if  the concerns of women students are to be accurately represented. 

We need your voice – please complete the survey!

The administration is truly interested in hearing what you have to say.  They are willing to make changes in such things as college and departmental climate, student workload, and curricular flexibility, but can’t identify or justify changes without a good, solid data base that you can provide by filling out the survey.  The survey is open until February 6!

ICSSP Scholarships, Deadline: March 1, 2011

Applications for ICSSP scholarships are now being accepted. The scholarships support the last 2 years of undergraduate study in the fields of information assurance and security at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  ICSSP is a program of the Information Trust Institute (ITI), overseen by ITI's NSA Center for Information Assurance Education and Research.

REQUIREMENTS:To be eligible for consideration for an ICSSP scholarship, you must be:
- A United States citizen, and
- A full-time student within two years of graduation in a coherent formal program at Illinois that is focused on computer security or information assurance.
Transfer students are eligible to apply upon admission to the UI College of Engineering; students transferring from 2-year colleges are encouraged to apply.

BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS:The value of the scholarship is approximately $30,000 per year. For a 2-year period, selected students will receive the following benefits:
- Tuition.
- Stipends to support room & board and other costs.
- Funding for travel needed to participate in ICSSP activities, such as relevant workshops and seminars and an annual job fair that all participating students are required to attend.
- Funding towards the cost of textbooks and equipment needed for success in the program.
- Internships and mentoring in a Federal Government and/or National Laboratory setting.
- Guidance from an ITI/ICSSP faculty advisor, identified through the ICSSP program, who can act as a mentor in the information assurance and security fields.
- Experience as an NSF research funding recipient.
- Research opportunities at ITI centers and laboratories.

Society of Women Engineers Scholarships

The upperclass application for SWE Scholarships opened December 1st. Sophomores and above for the 2011-2012 academic year sophomores can apply through February 15th. Freshmen can create a profile now, but their application will not be available until March.

The Heart of Collaboration: How Science and Engineering Go Hand-in-Hand

We are excited to pass along an article written by Joanne Manaster, a faculty member in the School of Integrative Biology, and the head of our Bioengineering camp for G.A.M.E.S.  Professor Manaster is also the author of the website Joanne Loves Science.

From the article:
"How often do you give thought to your heart? As long as your heart is beating properly and without pain, most of us are unconcerned with how doctors, scientists and engineers study the heart, diagnose problems, and create solutions to conditions and maladies that affect the heart.

When something goes wrong with the heart, doctors are able to diagnose the problem based on knowledge supplied by science. The tools doctors use to diagnose the problem (such as ultrasound, the electrocardiogram (EKG), the stethoscope and blood pressure machine) and then treat the problem (via stents, pacemakers, replacement valves and drugs) come from a field called bioengineering. Let’s take a look at how the broad field of bioengineering helps us when our heart is not at its best. By definition, bioengineering can be considered a combination of any field of engineering mixed with any field of biology, in any proportion."

2011 ITI Undergraduate Summer Research Internship, Deadline: January 31, 2011

2011 ITI UNDERGRADUATE SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY http://www.iti.illinois.edu/2011interns
Applications due January 31, 2011 (for international applicants) or February 20, 2011 (for U.S. applicants)

The Information Trust Institute (ITI), a national leader in combining research and education with industrial outreach in trustworthy and secure information systems, invites undergraduates to apply for Undergraduate Research Internship awards for Summer 2011. Selected students will be supervised by ITI researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who are leading experts in a number of information trust, information assurance, and security research areas.

All interns will receive stipends and housing. The duration of the internships will be 8-10 weeks. The main program will run from May 31 to July 29; if those dates conflict with your academic calendar, other start and end dates may be considered.

ELIGIBILITY:Applicants should be undergraduate students at any university, in their second or third year, who have completed some technical course work in computing. Applicants who will have completed their third (junior) year are preferred. Both U.S. and international students are welcome to apply.

APPLICATION PROCESS:Please apply at www.iti.illinois.edu/2011interns no later than January 31, 2011 (if you are an international student, including international students now studying in the U.S.) or February 20, 2011 (if you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident). Note that international students have an earlier deadline in order to allow time for visa applications and processing.
